Kitchen loft

Clean, cool, durable: this is the best way to describe an industrial-style kitchen. For lovers of imperfections, this kitchen style is just right. Because even if a kitchen is brand new, it will show signs of wear and tear - and that's intentional. It's the little imperfections that make otherwise straightforward kitchens interesting. Below we explain what an industrial kitchen is, what materials and kitchen cabinets determine its appearance, and how to achieve that distinct industrial look.

What does an industrial style kitchen look like?

When you think of industry, you think of concrete, steel and large halls. And that, simply put, is exactly what an industrial style kitchen is all about. To give the kitchen an industrial look, it should, if possible, be implemented in an open kitchen-living room or loft setting. This is where these kitchens shine. Of course, you can create an industrial-style kitchen indoors if you design the walls and floor correctly.

If you value perfectionism in the kitchen, you should not buy an industrial style kitchen. They look intentionally imperfect. Materials—especially concrete, wood and steel—should show signs of wear to enhance the appearance. Everything should look individual and less like the perfect image from a catalog.

Wood, concrete, steel: suitable materials for industrial style

To make the kitchen look as solid and rough as possible, you can use different materials. In addition to metal and steel, concrete is especially popular in industrial-style kitchens. You can choose real material for the facade or countertop, or choose an imitation, which is often much cheaper. If you do not want the kitchen to be designed in one tone, you can combine it, for example, with wood-look facades. They also bring more warmth into a cool-looking kitchen. However, make sure that the wood fronts are fairly rough in texture, look second-hand, or look like wood slats. If the fronts are too thin, the industrial look will disappear.

An industrial look is achieved with these colors.

Not only materials determine the appearance of the kitchen, color also plays a big role. For an industrial-style kitchen, you should stick to a muted color scheme. Classics like black, white and gray go well with this style, but colors like petrol, navy blue or dark brown also go well with this style. You can create highlights using other colors, but the motto here is: less is more. Red, orange and yellow pair best with muted industrial colors.

Not to be neglected: industrial kitchen walls and floors

A solid gray industrial kitchen against a light yellow wall? It just doesn't fit. When planning your kitchen, do not disturb the style of the walls and floors. Otherwise, the kitchen will look out of place. As with the materials from which the kitchen is made, so with the wall: concrete, rough plaster, unplastered clinker brick walls and old brick - the main thing is that it looks raw and supposedly used. The flooring should be dark wood, stone or dark cork to match the industrial style kitchen. A kitchen planner can give you helpful tips to ensure your walls and floors match your new kitchen.

Find the right accessories

Accessories such as vases, bowls, etc. are not completely prohibited in an industrial style kitchen, but they should be used sparingly. It is also important not to disrupt the style, so you should avoid flashy patterns. And lamps or other copper decorations fit well into this type of kitchen!
